The BRM Concert and Jam Session returns to Barzakh Cafe this month, presenting "Tabla Waves: Farrukhabad in Brooklyn." The tabla is an ancient instrument whose music has been passed down for generations through oral tradition. Mir Naqibul Islam brings this living tradition to the stage in a solo recital of classic compositions. He’ll be joined by Arun Ramamurthy on violin, providing the melodic flow and accompaniment.

‍The performance will be followed by the legendary BRM Jam Session, based in ragas but free to travel the world and hosted by BRM Co-Artistic Director, Neel Murgai. Musicians coming to participate in the Jam Session get free admission. Sign up to play in the jam here https://event-sign-up.onrender.com/Event/182

Mir Naqibul Islam is a New York–based tabla artist from the Farrukhabad gharana, part of a lineage passed down through generations of oral tradition. Trained in the traditional guru-shishya style, he presents solo tabla recitals and also collaborates with vocalists, instrumentalists, and dancers across South Asian traditions. Beyond classical stages, he is known for crossing genres and bringing tabla into new sound worlds. His performances connect tradition with contemporary expression, featuring collaborations in jazz, chamber music, Middle Eastern music, contemporary new music and other global styles. Through concerts, projects, and teaching, Mir continues to share the depth of his lineage while shaping a modern voice for tabla on today’s international stage.
