As part of BRM’s ongoing efforts introspecting on privilege and access in the world of South Asian classical music, we are honored to host a panel on the intersecting roles of caste, faith, and gender in musical expression. Reverend Immanuel Karunakaran, an ordained minister in the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church and expert practitioner of the Dalit folk art of paraiyattam, will be leading the discussion with Reverend C.R.Samson Rasa and Ms. Kani Muthu Selvi of the Madras Diocese. Together, they will draw on their experiences building community and artistic equity through the preservation and performance of Tamil folk music.
