George Crotty

Cello

Canadian cellist/composer George Crotty’s inquisitive eclecticism embraces fiddle-derived ornamentation, the agile one-finger gestures of Indian classical music, adapted electric guitar techniques, and the bold articulations of jazz bass. One half of the Loose Roots Duo with West Coast fiddler Gabriel Dubreuil, and leader of his titular world-jazz inflected Trio, the Toronto-based Crotty’s modernist genre-bending is heavily influenced by his hometown’s vibrant pluralism. The George Crotty Trio’s 'Four String Nomad' (2019) showcases his expressive fluidity and modal orientation. Versed in many styles, the world-jazz outfit speaks an inclusive language drawing inspiration from all over. Their cross-cultural interplay draws on diverse influences within jazz and world music including post-bop, modal jazz, Indian Raga, and Arabic Maqam. Their second album 'Chronotope' will be released in the summer of 2022. George Crotty endorses Remic Microphones. He acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
